Welcome to London2sttropez.co.uk!
On 20th September 2009 Jamie Hockin, Andrew Wolfe Murray and Alex Mortimer will be cycling from London (well, Putney to be exact) to St Tropez in the south of France. They aim to arrive in St Tropez on Wednesday 30th September.
Why? Well, it was Jamie’s idea and he decided that he would try and recruit a few of his closest mates to do it with him. Wolfie was the only one stupid enough to say yes – to start with.
The reason behind this is because in 1987, Jamie’s sister Jennie died of cancer at the age of 3. Aware that he hasn’t done any substantial fundraising in the 22 years that have passed since then, Jamie felt it was time to put that right.
Candlelighters, the children’s cancer charity, were an enormous support to Jamie’s parents and they continue to do fantastic work (see above tab) for so many people like the Hockins every day. The guys are very proud to be able to have the opportunity to give something back to them.
So, in good faith, but painfully aware of the enormity of the task ahead, they have decided to don their helmets and best (padded) Lycra and take to the saddle, largely on the basis that cycling is the lesser of the best known ‘charity evils’.
They did think about doing something else, like maybe the Marathon de Sable, but Jamie doesn’t like running. Or perhaps an extreme triathlon, but Jamie doesn’t swim fantastically well and as stated above, Jamie doesn’t like running.
So…… this left them with cycling.
John O’Groats to Lands End, could do, but finishing in St. Tropez appealed more.
Just a nice gentle pedal downhill to the French Coast, a mere 985 miles, in time for Les Voiles de St. Tropez, the end of season sailboat regatta which attracts a ‘desperately chic’ international crowd into which the saddle sore guys with bad tans should fit well.
As mentioned earlier on, Wolfie was the only one stupid enough to say yes at the beginning. Due to various work committments Alex was unable to committ until recently, but we are over the moon that he is joining us. It’ll be nice to have someone else to talk to, if nothing else.
Alex has, unfortunately, an equally poignant reason for cycling. His sister, Jo, lost her battle with lung cancer in March 2006 and in loving memory of her, he will be raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
They will be doing this unassisted (without support vehicle) and will be carrying all their clothes/food/water etc for the full 10 days.
So that’s WHAT they are doing and WHY.
For fund raising, comments of encouragement, training updates and saddle sore updates during the ride, please keep watching this space!
They are 2 equally worthy charities which all 3 of us are very proud to support. All charity monies raised “offline” (through fundraising events etc) will be split equally down the middle at the end of our trip. For more info on donating “offline” please email Jamie, Wolfie or Alex – contact details on the sponsors page.
